Good 4 You & Planet 2 was formed out of neccesary. When owners Jorleen and Joe lived in rural Alberta they had problems finding the products that they where use to using. They started ordering through food groups, and soon found they where ordering items for friends. Eventually they started a web sight to sell thier items within the community. In the summer of 2010 Jorleen was visiting family in Quesnel, when she came across an oppertunity to purchase an existing business. A few months latter Good 4 You & Planet 2's retail store was born.
Pricing
Are prices to high?
It depends on how you look at things, all things being relative…they're not. Its what it costs to produce quality, nutritious food! But to compare:
Big Grocery stores traditionally sell items marginally above cost and use volume as the way to achieve profit. With a larger volume they have more of a buying power. Buying in large quantities gives them better deals from the suppliers. Focusing on volume, grocers strive to build a network of stores, and lower their costs by cutting out third parties. For many years now the trend has been to build as large a network as possible and control as much of the production and distribution as possible. Once a grocer has lowered costs and increased volume sufficiently, they compete with "loss leaders" (items sold below cost) to hook customers and drive competitive grocers out of business.
At first glance, this looks good for the consumer: lower prices. But with this strategy comes lower food quality and less consumer choice. The handful of grocers with control over the production and distribution of food are focused on profit first and foremost. The quality of the food and how it's produced is not always as important.
At Good 4 You & Planet 2, we work with local suppliers, farmers and ranchers as well as whole sale suppliers who specialize in healthy and earth friendly products. We do not have the purchasing power's that a large chain store would normally have. Prices are based off of margins that are adiquate for the local supplier and for the store to be sustainable. When we do get discounts from the supplier we pass the discount down to the consumer!
